WIP: An Elemental Fire Fae

Inspiration for a new little fairies can come from almost anything…an image, a thought, a feeling, or a particular color. The later was the case for myself when beginning this week’s little one.

I’d made a pair of wings that when held in the light, they had such a flash of “fire”, taking on hues of oranges, reds, and greens. Upon going to my trim and mohair box, I’d found the perfect combination of colors to match her little wings.

The trims will be used as little bits of clothing accented by firey red mohair for her lovely locks.

After blushing her, I thought I would try mottling her body and limbs with a bit of color to give her an earthy feel. Rusty reds and along with a bit of green was used.

After applying her hair, I decided to leave it long instead of trimming it. I felt it add to her “flaming” essence. She also had this wild thing going on with her hair in the front, and thought I would just go with… after all… during the creative process these little ones more than often tend to call the shots. They seem to know just how they want to be!

More photos of her can be seen HERE.

Do you bake each added part? Like the head and thin parts first, bake, then add clay and bake at different times or just once after it is all finished? Thanks

Most figures are baked in a series of steps, according to each one’s pose, which can vary from one sculpture to the next.

The head is baked first to retain the detail of the features, while attaching it to the body, and so forth for the limbs, feet and hands.

For myself, I personally find it challenging to attempt sculpting all in one stage. I much prefer to bake/set the figure as I go.

Thank-you Susan for your interest and for your question!
